Man tortures 13 year old son to death, buries corpse

Culled from Punch
A 34-year-old man, Arogundade Ahmed, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly flogging his son to death.
According to eyewitnesses, Arogundade tortured his 13-year-old son, Qudus, to death because Qudus broke into someone’s house and attempted to steal.
Arogundade was said to have killed his son in the presence of his little sister, Sherifat.
After killing the boy, Arogundade dug a grave and buried him in front of his house in Alogba Estate area of Ikorodu. (Above photo - Arogundade’s house. Circle, the grave)
Our correspondent, who visited the crime scene, learnt that the incident occurred on June 27, 2013.
It was leant that the deceased was an apprentice at a mechanic workshop in the area.
A senior police officer at Ipakodo Police Division, who craved anonymity, said, “We were told that on the said date, Qudus broke into the house of one Apoti Lateef and attempted to steal. Lateef raised the alarm, accosted the boy and then called his (Qudus) master, Idowu Gabriel.

“Gabriel and Lateef said they tied up the boy and then called his father to take him away.”
Our correspondent learnt that Arogundade took the boy home and then beat him up with barbwire, sticks and other objects for about five hours.
As the beating continued, Qudus started getting weak and later died.

According to eyewitnesses, on seeing that Qudus had given up the ghost, Arogundade called a grave digger to bury his corpse.

An eyewitness, Adekunle Adekoya, told PUNCH Metro that no one could intervene when Arogundade was beating up his son because Arogundade was a hot-tempered man.
He said, “He (Arogundade) is hot-tempered. When he brought his son home around 12pm, he beat him till about 5pm. The boy kept on screaming and we could do nothing to save him because we did not want his trouble.

“Some neighbours were also around at the time but no one wanted to interfere. After sometime, the boy just went unconscious. We did not know he was dead. It was when I saw a man digging a grave in front of Arogundade’s house around 7.30pm that I knew the worst had happened.
“I immediately called the Lagos State Emergency telephone number but no one came.”
The traditional leader of the community, Oludapo Sule, said he reported the matter to the police as well as members of the Oodua People’s Congress.

He said they were able to apprehend Arogundade at midnight.
He said, “I received an anonymous call on the day of the incident and the caller told me that a man had killed and buried his son in front of his house. I was able to meet with the landlords in the area, who confirmed the incident to me

“So, at midnight, he was picked up and taken to the police station. The matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba and I have written my statement.”
Sule however urged the police to ensure that Qudus’ corpse was exhumed and given proper burial.
Chairman, Alogba Estate and Palapo Town Community Development Association, Mr. Agboola Aluko, said Arogundade had been terrorising the community for quite some time.
He said Arogundade had inflicted machete cuts on Qudus before and had even threatened to kill members of the community.
He said, “Arogundade had beaten Qudus with a machete before and even almost killed his wife. That was why she divorced him. Even when he was being arrested, he threatened to deal with anyone who spoke against him.

“I have settled many disputes in this area caused by Arogundade. Even women in the area are scared of him. We have reported his bad behaviour to the police before.”
Arogundade, however, said he did not kill his son. He said his son was merely beaten after he was accosted for stealing.

The police statement on the incident read, “Upon his arrest, Arogundade said he did not kill his son. He said he (Qudus) was almost dead when Lateef and Gabriel handed him over. He said his son died soon after and then buried his corpse in front of his house and went to bed.

The police source said, “We have also arrested Lateef and Gabriel but they claimed they only tied up the boy and did not kill him. Investigations are ongoing.”

When contacted on the telephone, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said she would call back.

Nigeria Gets $1.1b Chinese Loan

Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
Nigeria has secured a $1.1billionChinese low-interest loan to develop airports and hydro power plants, Finance Minister Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said yesterday.
The Coordinating Minister of the Economy spoke ahead of President Goodluck Jonathan’s four-day state visit to China, which starts today.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala said she was also looking for Chinese investments and increased trade with Nigeria.
She said: “China is desirous of increasing its lifting of Nigerian oil.”
The petroleum minister is among senior cabinet members on the trip along with several governors. She said as United States’ demand for Nigerian oil has fallen, India and China have taken up the slack.
Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said the loan are part of the $3 billion approved by China at less than 3 per cent interest rate.
Also yesterday, the Presidency maintained that the visit is not a junket.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, spoke with State House correspondents shortly before the departure. He said there are 13 ministers on the entourage in strategic national interest.
He also denied the reports in some quarters that the trip was planned to spite United States President Barack Obama for refusing to visit Nigeria during his recent trip to Africa.
He said: “China is a very important country. China is the largest market in the world, with its 1.35 billion people. China is also the world’s largest creditor nation. China is also the largest importer and exporter of goods and it is a large consumer of primary commodities, including crude oil. In fact, after the US, China is the largest importer of crude oil in Nigeria.
“So, it is in our strategic national interest to have very good relationship with such a country. Nobody can call this trip a junket. The claim that the China trip is a responce to the fact that Obama did not come to Nigeria is also not true because this trip was planned one year ago. Every country has the right to determine where they go.
“We have excellent relationship with the U.S. and the truth of the matter is that nobody can overlook America. But China is also an important partner. China has shown a lot of interest in Africa in the last few years.
He added: “Nigeria is a major trading partner with China. We have over 30 Chinese companies operating here.”
According to him, the President will use the trip to strengthen the bilateral relations between China and Nigeria.
He also explained that since the Chinese President just took over in the country, the trip will provide President Jonathan an opportunity to reach out to key players in China and provide opportunity for the two leaders to establish rapport.
“What Nigeria is interested in is long-term sustainable relationship between the two countries. The third leg of the trip is that China is a major trading partner in Nigeria. Last year alone, China imported about 80,000 metric tons of cassava chips.
“China has shown a lot of interest and support for the President’s determination to diversify the nation’s economy. So you find China supporting our agricultural programme.”
“Part of the purpose of this trip is also to encourage China to invest more in Nigeria; foreign direct investment. The emphasis is not necessarily on loans although during this trip, there are two concessionary loans that will be considered in relation to the Zungeru Hydro Power Project and one other.
Nigeria’s Ambassador to China Aminu Wali yesterday raised the alarm over the number of Nigerians in Chinese prisons for mainly drugs related crimes. He put the figure at 400.
The ambassador, who spoke to reporters ahead of Jonathan’s state visit, described trafficking in drugs as a big issue that has engaged the Nigerian embassy in China. He called for reorientation and the assistance of security agents in educating young Nigerians in laws of other countries.
He said: “We are here to make sure that we understand the laws of this country and we try to educate Nigerians to understand the laws of the host country and if they go foul of the law we try as much as possible to see that they are being humanely treated. But we certainly have big issue with drug related crimes committed by Nigerians in China and when you look at the whole of Africa you find out that about 80 per cent of all the offences and crimes committed by Africans in China about 80 per cent is committed by Nigerians. That is why I think we are having running battle to try and control the situation but we need assistance from back home; from the security agencies manning our exits and entry points in Nigeria to be more alert and vigilant to make sure these type of individuals do not escape and pass through our routes to come into, not only to China but any other country in the world because drug trafficking, as it were, drug is the biggest problem that we have as far as Nigerians are concerned.
“Right now, we have over 400 Nigerians in various jails in China and 80 per cent of them are there for drug related offences so you can see what we have”.

Homes Of The World's Most Powerful Celebrities In 2013

Taylor Swift has been busy. When the country music diva released her fourth studio album in October, it sold 1.2 million copies in the first week. Pile on a tour and hefty endorsement deals with Diet Coke, Sony SNE +0.05% and Covergirl, and Nashville’s country-pop princess grossed $55 million in the 12 months ending in June. She’s been investing a good chunk of the proceeds in real estate, snapping up multimillion-dollar estates from coast to coast with cold hard cash.
In April, Swift dropped an estimated $17 million for a sprawling Rhode Island mansion called High Watch. Perched on five acres in tony Watch Hill, the Cape Cod traditional encompasses 11,000 square feet of living space including seven bedrooms and nine baths, and boasts 700 feet of beach frontage.
She bought the property weeks after flipping an estate in Massachusetts’ Hyannis Port, a Cape Cod address just down the way from ex-boyfriend Connor Kennedy’s family compound. Bought in November for $4.8 million, she sold it for $5.7 million, making a quick profit of almost a million dollars.
Then there’s the 2,800-square-foot Cape Cod style house in Beverly Hills, Calif., that Swift picked up in 2012 for just under $4 million. In Nashville, Tenn., her home base, she owns a penthouse condo and the Northumberland Estate, just outside the city, which she reportedly bought for her parents.
Sound like a lot of house hopping? For mere mortals maybe, but Swift, who ranks fifth on FORBES’ annual Celebrity 100 list, is just doing what comes naturally for the world’s most powerful celebrities.
Every year Forbes releases its Celebrity 100 list, a ranking of America’s top stars as measured by earnings and fame. With the help of Realtor.com, Trulia TRLA +1.86%.com, Zillow Z +1.14% and others, we’ve dug through listings and property records to uncover where these actors, singers, athletes and public personalities bed down for the night. We included homes bought and sold in the past year as well as a few long-term nests. Perhaps not surprisingly, most are located in the Los Angeles area.
The hottest neighborhoods among the Tinseltown elite are Beverly Hills’ Trousdale Estates and Hollywood Hills’ Bird Streets, two side-by-side communities perched high in the hills above Sunset Boulevard. “The reason that they are so much in demand right now is the view,” says Sally Forster Jones, an L.A.-based Coldwell Banker Previews International real estate agent who has helped broker deals for the likes of Barbra Streisand, Candy Spelling, Jessica Biel and Arnold Schwarznegger. “Celebrities, particularly, really want a drop-dead view and they will go to any lengths to get it. Price is less material than having the view.”
Actress Jennifer Aniston (No. 64 on the Celeb 100) has been a fan of the area for years. In 2011, she renovated and sold a Trousdale Estates abodeknown as Ohana for $35 million. In 2012, after scooping up a sprawling A. Quincy Jones-designed Bel Air estate for $21 million, she rented out another Trousdale Estates home for a reported $40,000 per month while remodeling the new purchase. Between her Ohana sale and the Bel Air purchase, the A-lister is also said to have briefly rented an Oriole Drive spread, according to the Real Estalker. (A flock of avian-named roads in the area has earned it the nickname of the Bird Streets.)
Other stars nestled in these hills include Celebrity 100 listmakers Ellen DeGeneres (No. 10) and Leonardo DiCaprio (No. 21). Degeneres and wife Portia de Rossi picked up a Trousdale Estates spread last year after selling a sprawling Beverly Hills compound to television host Ryan Seacrest (No. 26) for $37 million. DiCaprio has owned a place in the Bird Streets since his breakout role in the movie Titanic. DiCaprio also owns a penthouse condo in Manhattan’s Battery Park City and two homes in Malibu, including a three-structure compound in celebrity-studded Malibu Colony that he’s trying to sell for $18.9 million.
Certain aesthetics and amenities are must-haves among the rich and famous. Modern architecture has been the most popular, says Forster Jones.  Huge windows, sleek lines and open floor plans that incorporate indoor-outdoor living are ideal. Screening rooms are a must as are exercise rooms.
But no features are more prized – and certainly more necessary — than those centered around privacy. In Los Angeles, that means estates sitting at the end of long gated driveways, tucked behind hedgerows and trees, preferably in exclusive communities guarded by security officers. High-tech security systems are necessary, as the recently released movie The Bling Ring (based on true events in which teenagers looted celebrity homes) so aptly illustrates.
In New York City, it means an apartment in a highly exclusive building boasting a small number of units (meaning less neighbors), top-notch security, and discreet entrances, be it via an on-premises parking garage or a private elevator. In Midtown Manhattan, addresses like 15 Central Park West, the Time Warner Center, and new up-and-coming mega towers One57 and 432 Park Ave have lured celebrity residents. Downtown in the West Village, arguably the most sought-after neighborhood among A-listers, townhouses on quiet tree-lined streets have been popular and ritzy boutique developments like up-and-coming 150 Charles Street have attracted a number of famous buyers.
“Celebrities need several things to make their existence more pleasurable, starting with an on-site garage or a private driveway,” says Dennis Mangone, a managing director for Douglas Elliman Real Estate who works in New York and Miami. Mangone has brokered deals for celebrities ranging from Beyonce (No. 4) to Rosie O’Donnell, for whom he just sold a Miami Star island estate for $16.5 million and recently listed a $11 million New York penthouse. “When you look at the townhouse Madonna bought several years ago, she was only looking at houses with garages because she can’t get into a car in the street,” he adds.
Madonna, indeed. The pop icon, No. 5 on FORBES’ list, has been busily trimming her property portfolio this year. Having plunked down $32.5 million in 2009 on a triple-wide Georgian-style townhouse – with two garages – on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, she listed her duplex co-op apartment in Manhattan’s Harperley Hall for $23.5 million in November. It sold last month for a discounted $16 million. On the West Coast, she’s also offloading a Beverly Hills estate for $22.5 million. After quietly shopping the 1.25-acre French country estate as a so-called pocket listing, the 17,000-square-foot home officially debuted on the Multiple Listing Services earlier this year.

Walmart Tops List Of Most Patriotic Retailers

What do Jeep, Hershey HSY +0.61%‘s,Coca-Cola KO -0.32%, Disney and Walmart have in common? They are among
the most patriotic brands and icons as viewed by U.S. shoppers. Not only is Walmart one of the most patriotic brands in the U.S., but it handily beat all other retailers for the title.
Take that Macy's M +1.24%, Sears and JCPenney.
Not only does America overwhelmingly shop at Walmart, but shoppers equate the Walmart brand with the United States more so than any other retail name, according to Brand Keys, a New York-based brand and customer engagementresearch group.
Walmart, at No. 15, is the only retailer to make the list.
“We looked at eight different categories of retail, which came out to 25 retail brands included in the survey,” explains Robert Passikoff, founder and president of Brand Keys. “Walmart was No. 15 at an 81% rating for the patriotism value, followed by Sears at 80%.”
Sears’ Craftsman brand came in next at No. 16 on the list, further reinforcing the idea that the value of Sears’ brands are stronger than its retail operation. But that’s another story.
“No other retail brands even showed up in the top 50,” says Passikoff. “After that, the ratings fell below 70% and kind of  ‘grayed out.’”
Walmart was also No. 1 on Brand Key’s annual Customer Loyalty Engagement Index (January 2013) for the discount retail category, but that included a lot of different category-specific values. Out of all retailers, Walmart had the highest resonance for just patriotism.
Walmart’s spot on this list may come as a surprise to some and disappointment to many. That Walmart would be viewed as patriotic in spite of all the negative views and in spite of being hammered on wages and benefits.
Perhaps Walmart’s recent pledge to boost sourcing of U.S. made products by $50 billion over the next 10 years and its promise to hire 100,000 honorably discharged veterans in that time has helped its image.
Or perhaps, it’s the fact that more than 65% of U.S. shoppers regular frequent Walmart stores. Americans quite rightly consider themselves to be patriots, therefore their top choice for shopping must also be the most patriotic choice. The alternative is to feel like traitors to their country.
“Rational aspects like ‘Made in the USA’ and CSR activities play a part in the total make-up of the brand, of course,” said Passikoff. “But with strong emotional engagement, good marketing just gets better. It’s an unbeatable combination.”
